Achieving Equity in the Diagnosis of Black Men’s Distress and Depression
Black men have a unique history of anti-Black gendered structural racism, medical experimentation, misdiagnosis, and mistreatment in healthcare that have critical implications for how we understand, diagnose, and treat Black men in health services and health policy. The limited research available often fails to acknowledge the range of differences in how Black men may experience stress, distress, and mental health issues. This study aims to refine how we understand Black men’s experiences of distress and depression in order to improve the diagnostic process for Black men.

The Real Face of Men’s Health: 2025 United States Report aims to drive progress in the men’s health space by utilizing a health equity lens. Doing so will propel more of the discoveries into sustainable interventions that will lead to healthier, longer lives for boys and men and help build thriving communities around them.
By improving men’s health, we hope to not only help men directly but also support future generations and the communities that surround them. We believe that healthier men lead to healthier relationships, healthier families and healthier communities.
